Pub of the Week – The Goodmanham Arms

Despite the A1079 Beverley to York road being one of the busiest in the county there can’t be many passing travellers that bother to turn off it at Market Weighton to whet their whistle. Sadly, the town has surprisingly few decent boozers. If they (literally) went the extra mile though, into the neighbouring village of Goodmanham they’d find one of the friendliest and newly-popular pubs in the East Riding.

Until a couple of years ago the Goodmanham Arms was a decent enough village pub which was run by its then-incumbent landlady pretty much as a hobby, in that it opened only sporadically.

The pub is now transformed, however, not in looks (although it has been refitted a fair amount) but in attitude and offering. These days it wins CAMRA awards for the 7 regularly-rotated cask ales, it serves delicious locally-sourced food and pulls in a clientele made up of everyone from doctors and businessmen to farmers and mechanics and – a sign of a truly great boozer, this – they all banter in the bar without ever once mentioning their bank balances.

To thank for this renaissance we have Abbie and Vito Logozzi, the current owners who met and married ‘down south’ before relocating back to Abbie’s neck of the woods to raise their kids. Vito is (you may have guessed) Italian and his influence can be most keenly felt come winter, when they cook the likes of hog roast on an open fire or throw game and fowl into a pot roast which slow cooks all day long. This is the kind of Anglo-Italian fusion cooking all of us can get into.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any more perfect, there will soon be a brewery round the back. The gear is in place, Abbie has done the training and as soon as things quieten down enough to get on with it the Goodmanham Brewery will be supplying ales made on-site.

If things carry on as they are, though, there may not be time for that for a good while yet.
